What Causes Weakness And Discomfort In Arm After IV Drip?
I recently had a headache that cause me to go to the ER after a few days. while there they gave me some medication via IV. since then , that arm ( also the side of body on which my head hurt ) has felt very weak and off balance. At first I thought nothing of it since this was somewhat of symptom before the ER but right now I m a little worried. the IV was very close to a tendon or ligament and now my arm, which was on the stronger side of the body , feels a bit off. should i be worried?
Weakness and discomfort in the arm after IV drip is commonly due to Phlebitis (local trauma or injury to the vein). IV infiltration injury, swelling and inflammation of the spot of infiltration. Injury or damage to the nerves or veins. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP to detect any neurological impairment. Get nerve conduction tests done.
Some post intravenous drips complications go away by themselves in few days or weeks but some may take more time or require treatment. In the meantime, apply thrombophob ointment in the affected area. Take vitamin B6, B12 rich food or supplement.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
