Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Weakness In The Legs, Memory Loss And Difficulty In Swallowing?
My brother has not been diagnosed with any specific disease. He has had extensive tests for myasthenia gravis and dyspacia and the 4 doctors can not come up with an exact diagnosis. 2 neurologists and 4 GPs are running typical scans and MRIs and he is in speech therapy. He has severe weakness in his legs, memory loss that I have noticed failing in just the last week. He has fallen down twice and has a very hard time swallowing. Had an EMG that his neuro said was normal. He is taking Prednisone as prescribed by the neuro that can t give him a definitive diagnosis. Had 2 MRIs since Feb...found nothing . Had 2 Brain scans which came back normal as well. We need a diagnosis so that he can be treated for this disease. I am his primary caregiver as he can hardly speak at this time and it is becoming more apparent to me that he is afflicted with a neuromuscular my disorder more serious than myasthenia gravis. Your opinion will be anticipated and appreciated. Respectfully..Donna Brown
Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves. If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form. You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures. Also, you should have Aspirin and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks. In most cases it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.
