What Causes Wheezing And Cough While Lying Flat In A Heart Patient?

Hi, Last year in 2017 my dad had an open heart surgery to repair and replace his aortic value due to endocarditis, this was his 2nd open heart surgery after his first surgery 12yrs ago to replace his value with a mechanical valve. He also had a pace maker inserted after his 2nd surgery, due some complications he s heart rate could not come back to normal, so the pace maker stablizes his heart rate whenever it goes down. Now a days he has wheezing when he sleeps and coughs a lot while lying down, what could be the cause of these two things? Should I be worried or are these normal after open heart surgery?

Hello,

Yes, these are the symptoms of heart failure. Probably his ejection fraction is low. He will need echo if not done recently. He needs to be on medicines for that like beta blockers, ace inhibitors, diuretics. He should restrict salt and liquids intake.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
