What Causes White And Red Bumps Around The Tonsils?

I just left the dentist for my 6 mo check up and started having a hard time swallowing on my ride home. I just looked in the mirror and I see lots of white and red bumps around my tonsils (not on them), uvula and all the way to my back teeth. I can scrape off the white layer to a few of the bumps but not all of them. I did not notice this earlier today and the dentist did not say anything. What is it? I am on quite a few medications and I do get canker sores quite often. I m a 26 year old, Caucasian female with migraines and endometriosis.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The white and red bumps can be an episode of major apthous ulcers, viral infection, allergic reaction or fungal infection as you can scrape the white layer off the bumps.

If it is a viral infection, you do not require any treatment and they will heal in 7-10 days on their own.

In case of apthous ulcers, you should apply local Benzocaine gel (Mucopain) over the ulcers and should start B-Folcin once a day to overcome possible deficiency of vitamin B12. You can also add Rebagen thrice a day for a week to heal the ulcers faster.

I suggest that you also start antihistamine such as Loratidine 10 mg (Lorfast) so that allergic reaction can be controlled.

If you develop a white curd like patch over the tongue and other areas of the mouth that you can scrape off leaving a red surface beneath, you should consult the dentist again to look for possible fungal infection and carry out its treatment.

The ulcers should heal in 7-10 days. If they do not, then also I recommend that you see a dentist for the clinical examination of the oral cavity.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
