What Causes Yeast Smell In The Nose Post Sinus Surgery?

I had sinus surgery a month ago. 1 week post surgery exam was fine. I see my doctor next week. For the last 2 days, I have been smelling yeast. I am still irrigating my sinuses with a saline solution twice a day. I am also on Flonase and Simbacort (sp). Do I need to contact my ENT before next week?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The antibiotics & steroid nasal spray might damage normal nasopharyngeal flora, which can enhance yeast prevalence. And yes, you should see your doctor earlier. He may prescribe something to combat yeast (if at all it has been infected) or may add something to correct normal flora in nasal passage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
