What Causes Yellow And Green Vaginal Discharge?

I am 50 years of age. I haven t had a period for two years now. About 5 days ago I started having a heavy flow of discharge. Yellow to green in color and runny. I believe I had a yeast infection at first and treated myself for that. However the discharge is still continuing and doesn t seem to want to subside.

Hello,
I have seen your question and understand your problem. You have mentioned that you have had yellow green heavy vaginal discharge. But We need further information to know the exact cause of your problem. We need to know if you are sexually active or not.
If you are sexually active, there can be 3 infections which can cause such discharge. They are Trichomonas, Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Trichomonas causes profuse, watery yellow green discharge. Chlamydia and gonorrhea cause thick yellow green discharge along with mucus and pus.
You will need to visit your gynecologist for getting a vaginal swab done. Gynecologist will take certain swabs called high vaginal and endocervical swabs (swabs around the cervix and from the cervix), send the samples for microscopy and culture of the organisms. Then your treatment will depend on the type of organism identified.
If its Trichomonas, you will need to take a drug called Metronidazole. If its Chlamydia, you will need a drug called Azithromycin. If its Gonorrhea, you will need to take ceftriaxone.
If all your swabs turn out to be normal, your gynecologist might even suggest you to get transvaginal ultrasound done to rule out endometrial cancer as they are the most common cause of heavy vaginal discharge in women after their menopause.
Just visit your gynecologist. She will perform further testing to select the specific drug to treat you.
