Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Be Causing Pressure And Throbbing Sensation In My Back And Neck, Which Worsens When Lying Down?
I have a pressure feeling in my back on the right side of spine at about the T3-T4 area and on the right front/side on the edge of the pectoralis about half way down. Neck feels throbbing sensation. No apparent shortness of breath or dizziness. Throbbing and pressure more noticeable when taking deep breath. Lying down the pressure increases dramatically and extends into the head. I can’t lay down.
Throbbing sensation and pressure in the back and neck that worsens when lying down can be caused due to narrowing of the spinal canal in the thoracic region. Compress of the spinal cord or nerves in T3-T4 area may lead to pressure and pain. Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are degenerative disc disease due to age related wear and tear.
Herniated disc & muscle strain can also cause such symptoms. Pain and throbbing in the upper back can also be caused due to TOS, thoracic outlet syndrome that causes compression of the nerves and blood vessels. Get clinically examined by a GP or an orthopedist for an accurate diagnosis. The treatment of the cause will be done by medications and physical therapy.
Surgery is recommended only when there is no response to the treatment being given. You can take pain relieving medications, one stat after food for temporary relief.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
