Hi. Atrial fibrillation is usually caused by enlarged left atrium( a chamber), usually either due to some valve stenosis or due to previous history of emphysema/Chronic obstructive lung disease or lastly with senile changes in lungs which in turn will structurally alter the left atrium. Unfortunately once the atrial fibrillation developes the patient has to be put on drugs especially if symptomatic. But with latest pharmaceutical advances there are once a day preparations available. Consult your cardiologist to discuss strategies like radio ablation to try to abolish the focus of Atrial fibrillation.
