What Could Be The Reason For Swollen And Painful Feet? Had A Broken Toe Which Was Rectified

My top of my left foot is swollen and painful. The same thing happened last year and after 3 months, an xray discovered a break below the 2nd toe. It slowly came right and all winter it was normal. I live at the beach and walked a distance barefoot the other night and now my foot is exactly the same as last year... swwollen and painful. When I think back, it was in the same circumstances that it happened last year. I had to hobble around for 4 months. What do you think could be the problem?
