Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Be The Reason Of Wrapping Legs In An Ace Bandage?
my Mom is 91. She is in an assisted living. She has two types of edema on her legs. The edema around her ankles is very bulbous. She has had very painful itching. Her legs-particularly her left leg-burns. There are reddening rashes as well. The staff have put a hydrocortisone cream on her legs. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. They give her Tylenol but that can give her a stomach ache. The Dr. wanted her legs wrapped in a ace badnage but they fall off at night-not sure the reason for these wraps.
Hi, Thanks for asking. Looking at the symptoms and the clinical history, I can give my opinion as follows: 1. The edema is due to varicose veins leading to skin thickening, damage and itching 2. The bulbous or snake morphology is due to enlarged veins due to loss of valves. These veins leak leading on to edema 3. The ace bandage or varicose vein compression bandage compresses the vein and reduces the edema and the skin damage. It is necessary. 4. Surgeries are available and this age can cause complications. 5. The other leg, might have allergic reactions or possibly reddening due to skin damage secondary to varicose veins.
Try to use compression bandage, it will relieve symptoms and improve patients living conditions.
