What Could Cause Severe Sharp Pain In Ribs With History Of Having Cough And X-ray Showing Ribs Not Cracked?

I have had a cough for over a week, now on my left side at my ribs I have some discomfort but when I woke up this morning I had sharp pains there so I went to the family doctor and got a z pac and some robitussin. When I came home I fell asleep on couch for no more than 15 minutes and I had more pain in my ribs that made me feel like I was gonna pass out so I went to the E.R. and got an xray that showed my ribs were not cracked and I had no pneumonia which is good I guess, but im scared to go back to sleep because I know the pain will be back. What is wrong with me?

Hello,

Possible inflammation involving rib joints as costochondritis or other. Better to get a CT scan thorax, as everything will not be revealed upon by x-ray. Till that time, heating pad application and good analgesic spray and medicines will help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
