What Could Lead To Severe Pain In Rib Cage With No Possible Injury?

I am having sever pain in my right rib cage upon twisting or bumping my body on something or reaching back and lifting my arm. It has been going on for over 3 months and seems to be getting worse. I have not suffered an injury in this area. I am concerned about it.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

If the pain is occuring during specific movements of the body, then it is highly suggestive of a muscle spasm.

Try the following measures to see if your pain resolves,

- Take Rest and do not do any activities that cause pain
- Apply ice or a cold pack to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes, 4 times a day for several days. Wrap the ice or cold pack in a towel. Do not apply the ice directly to your skin.
- Take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help relieve pain along with a muscle relaxant preparation as needed
- Use heat when you are returning to physical activity. Then use it before stretching. Gentle heating can help loosen the muscle
- When the acute pain is gone, start gentle stretching exercises. Stay within pain limits. Hold each stretch for about 10 seconds and repeat 6 times.
- Physical therapy may speed up the recovery process. Therapeutic modalities such as Ultrasound, Massaging and specific exercises will be helpful.

If your symptoms are not improving with the above measures, consult your family physician for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
