What Could Minor Chest Pain And Increased Heart Rate Indicate?

Good evening, Sir. . . My 91 year-old mother with hx of angina and taking beta blocker (toprol tartrate) for her rapid heart rate/ atrial fibrillation. She tells me ten minutes ago that she has been uncomfortable with minor chest pain since 5:30 p.m. as her heart is racing. Her pulse is 130 radially, and her pressure is strong, but there is no B/P cuff around. She has been walking about the house, non-diaphoretic, with good color. She tells me that she has taken an additional Toprol 25 mg. an hour ago, along with 5 mg. of Valium. Mom s normal dose of Toprol is 25 mg, three time a day, and Valium PRN. I asked to take her to a nearby E.R. for a checkup. . . but she says she has these spells often and it will go away. (She doesn t want to bother anyone on Easter this late at night.) Should I push her to go in to the E.R. ?

Thanks for contacting HCM

I am sorry to hear about your mother's episodes of palpitations and chest pain. I am sorry it took us so long to contact you about this problem. In the future I would strongly urge your mother to seek medical attention when she is having these episodes of fast heart rate as they may indicate inadequate medication of additional heart problems.

Hope this answers your question. Please contact us again with any of your questions.
