What Could Recurring Numbness And Tingling In Upper Left Arm And Fingers Indicate?

I m concerned about discomfort in the inner part of my upper left arm. It is mild to moderately painful with concurrent numbness and tingling that extends to the tips of my left fingers. The numbness and tingling is the same as the feeling you get when something cuts off blood flow. I have had 3 cervical surgeries for multiple C-series ruptured discs in 1996, 2000, and 2003. Those were all causing symptoms in my right arm only. This is the first time I ve had any problems with my left side. The current symptoms don t feel the same as those I experienced with my right arm. The discomfort came on gradually over the past 3 weeks. I ve had no trauma or falls; I have had an increased level of physical activity in the same period, but the discomfort is most noticeable when I m sitting around in the morning. It doesn t feel muscular and my biceps and triceps don t hurt when I touch them. Thanks, Mark Nault

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It sounds very much like an irritated or damaged nerve that is causing these symptoms. I am sure this is not the answer you wanted to read, but I can’t tell you otherwise. The fact that now the left arm is affected is not too surprising. The nerve-endings are fine structures which are just a few millimeters (or less) apart from each other. So, with your clinical history you should definitely see a specialist and get an MRI.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Davis, General & Family Physician
