What Do Itchy Red Rashes All Over The Body Indicate?

Hi I have this rash that started behind my neck and now it is almost all of my body . It starts with a itchy red bump , then it multiplies and then it forms a thin red line about 3 to 4 inches to the next bump . My back right now looks like a road map . it has not affected my face hands or feet . Went to see a nurse practitioner and she said it was allergies and gave me steroid cream and pills . It has not gotten better and now it is spreading to my legs and the itch is unbearable . I keep a very clean house since I have two dogs . I just cant figure out how I got this . I am a diabetic but not on insulin just on med forman 500mg in the morning and 500mg at night . My sugar level is an average of 125 to 135 .

Hello,

As per your explanation, eruption of recurring bumps all over the body with rashes that are itchy can be due to common causes like:

1. Contact allergy or Contact Dermatitis, that is an allergic reaction which occurs when skin comes in contact with certain agents that your body is allergic to like skin cosmetics, detergents, soaps, fragrances, leather, latex, poison ivy et cetera.

2. Folliculitis or generalized hair follicle infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria leading to formation of painful bumps over different parts of the body.

3. Another cause can be food allergy or side effect of medicines.

You should consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a clinical examination and an Allergy test should be conducted. As of now, you can take anti-allergic like Benadryl for relieving itching and do cool compresses over bumps.

Once the cause is ruled out it will be treated according to below suggestions:

- In case of Contact Dermatitis you will be advised anti-allergic, topical steroid ointment application and also avoiding exposure to allergen when it is ruled out. In recurring conditions Immunotherapy will be advised to you.

- In case of folliculitis antibiotics oral and topical and topical steroids can be advised along with anti-allergic to control itching.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
