What Do Pain And Stiffness In The Hands And Fingers Indicate?

Hello, I am an adult female. Almost 60 yrs old. In the past month or so, I ve been having pain and stiffness in my hands and fingers. I ve had stiffness in my knees for a number of years but only painful when going up flights of stairs or riding a bicycle (so I don t). The pain in my hands is recent. I m thinking its arthritis but not sure if its osteo or rheumatoid. Is there a way to tell?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

To diagnose rheumatoid arthritis you need to consult a rheumatologist for clinical assessment of your joints, as well as performing few tests such as rheumatoid factor, X-ray, and other essential tests. To relieve the pain, you can benefit from over-the-counter analgesics, topical anti-inflammatory drugs, and cold compressors.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
