What Do Swelling And Inflammation On The Left Shin Indicate?

I presented with flu like symptoms 3 weeks ago. After two days I noticed that my left shin to toes were swollen and quite red, with pitting edema but otherwise non-painful. I went to our express care clinic where I was started on an broad spectrum antibiotic and kept off of work for 2 weeks keeping my leg elevated. The redness has resolved but the pitting edema is still present. I am now being treated with furosemide for 10 days but the edema is not reducing. My bloodwork is normal and I have had 2 ultrasounds that show I do not have any DVT. Any suggestions for me to bring up with my doctor?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

The fact that the redness is settled it s a good sign and that means that the antibiotics are working well.
The edema might in some cases take longer to settle and might not be a reason for concern especially if the pain in the area is getting better and you have no fever.

I would say continue the elevation of the foot and the recommendations of your doctor and seek medical help if the swelling is not getting better in another week or so or see your doctor earlier if you get any pain or worsening.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
