What Do The Following Cholesterol Levels Indicate?

I am a 64 year female..5 8 and 170lbs. My recent Cholesterol panel shows 252 overall w/149 LDL and Triglycerides at 156. My family Dr. suggested weight loss and more exercise which is the same recommendation he has given for the past 10+ years. Previous years levels have climbed from 215..235..240.. Should I inquire about statin RX? (I also carry the MTHFR gene)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I appreciate your concern for the high lipid profile.

You have an elevated Total Cholesterol (Desirable: Less than 200 mg/dL), LDL Cholesterol (Desirable: Less than 100 mg/dL), & Triglycerides (Desirable: Less than 150 mg/dL).

Since you have a methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR gene) defect which causes an abnormally high level of homocysteine in the blood. High levels of homocysteine are associated with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, ischemic stroke, and atherosclerosis (deposition of the lipids in the blood vessels of heart and brain).

In view of this you may need to reduce the levels of raised cholesterols by using Statins.

Yes, you have to inquire your treating physician regarding the treament of high cholesterol levels beside life style modifications like exercise and dietary restrictions.

Hope to have answered your query.

A feed back is appreciated.
