Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do You Suggest For High Fever When Diagnosed With Sinusitis?
High fever (104) b/l ear pain, sinus discharge (yellow) w pain, wheezing upper respiratory congestive w green phlegm. Diagnosed Sinusitis,b/l otitis media and bronchitis..rx Tussinex and Amoxicillin 875 q 12h. (Flu swab neg) Day 2 of ABX and now sharp pain with deep breathes. Should I be concerned with this change to update my doctor or let ABX run their course? Have CLL with hx of pneumonia.
Given your description, I do believe that the antibiotic (amoxicillin) provided, will not be effective enough to deal with this. They are some resistant bacteria that will not normally respond to amoxicillin alone and therefore require amoxicillin combination with clavulinic acid. I would have preferred your doctor giving you amoxicillin + clavulinic acid combination plus an antipyretic such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Tussinex contains these two agents together with hydrocordon but the dose might be lower than required. Unless your symptoms are getting worst than when you started the treatment, I will suggest you give it a day or two before seeing your doctor again. If symptoms are worst, then do go to your doctor sooner as it is evident the antibiotics is ineffective.
Hope this helps
