What Does this CT Scan Test Result Mean?

My CT scan shows "there is massive hydronephrosis of the right kidney with complete absence of cortex. The ureter is markedly dilated inferiorly to the level of an 8 mm stone just above the ureterovesical junction. This represents a finding of chronic obstruction. At least 2 small calcifications are present in calyces. " I have had no pain, or symptoms of any sort. This was found during a sonogram for another issue. I thought the stone could be removed and the kidney would return back to normal. My urologist says it won't and that the kidney needs to be removed. What is your opinion??

Hello, this condition called hydronephrosis is a condition where the kidney substance has been damaged and the kidney has been converted to a bag of fluid . it has occurred in your case due to obstruction by a stone. Hydronephrosis is an irreversible condition that is by removing the stone the kidney does not come back to normal so you may proceed as your doctor advised. Hydronephrosis is silent because the other kidney does all the work so it may be a chance discovery sometimes. The problem with hydronephrosis bis that this bag of fluid can become infected and that can cause a condition called pyonephrosis where the kidney becomes an infected bag of fluid which can be dangerous. People function fine with one kidney. The stone has to be removed and sent for analysis. You should also try to minimize your chances of getting more stones by analysing the type of stone and following advice to prevent its recurrence. Best regards
