My MRI results read L$-5 central protrusion with annular tear indents the thecal sac. The finding is age indeterminate. L5-S1 midline posterior postsurgical changes with an area of fat equivalent, butheterogeneous signal indenting the dorsal aspect of the thecal sac. This finding appears chronic. Correlation with prior surgical history is suggested. This may represent an unusual lipoma, surgical packing or even repair of Spina bifida. Never had spina bifida but did have surgery 35 years ago.
You have not mentioned the surgical procedure you underwent in the past but whenever any body part is removed during a surgical procedure then as a normal response the empty space left behind is infiltrated by fat. It is quite possible that this is what can be seen on your MRI....also, even if it is a lipoma, then again they are of benign nature and do not pose any threat. If it is not causing you any problem like lower back pain or symptoms of nerve compression ( radiating pain or altered sensation in lower limbs) then there is no need to worry.
I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact HCM again if you have any concerns. Wishing you good health.
