What Does 5htp/car/gtf/p 10/5/500/20 Compound Mean ?

A friend of mine was prescribed a drug for weight loss and I am curious about it. The prescription bottle says 5htp/car/gtf/p 10/5/500/20 compound. Can anyone tell me what this is and any info about it?

Hi. Thanks for your Query and for using Health Care Magic

The Weight Loss Medication Mentioned above contains multiple components.

1. 5 - Hydroxytryptophan - Appetite Suppressant
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), also known as oxitriptan (INN), is a naturally-occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. There is much circumstantial evidence that many humans are genetically predisposed to obesity. This predisposition may involve the same mechanism as that observed in rats genetically predisposed to obesity. In other words, many people may be predisposed to being overweight because they have a decreased conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP and, as a result, decreased serotonin levels. By providing preformed 5-HTP, this genetic defect is bypassed and more serotonin is manufactured. 5-HTP literally turns off hunger.

2. Chromium GTF - Weight Loss Supplement
Chromium Glucose Tolerance Factor contains chelated chromium for blood sugar control and carbohydrate balance. Weight Loss is improved with chromium. Insulin Resistance is helped with chromium.

Other components include creatine, lipid blocker and so on.

Such medications/supplements are available over the counter and some are not FDA approved as of now.
There medication do help in weigh loss. However, they are to be prescribed in patient who have morbid obesity - BMI > 40
Also side effects of the medications nee to be monitored and there such supplements should be taken under the guidance of the Physician

Thanks
