Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend has what I believe is a boil on his neck. It appears to have a small laceration at the top of it and he says it is too painful to try to manipulate it. My question is, there is a black spot near the bottom of it(resembles a scab)does that sound normal for a boil. I told him to put hot compresses on it for about 15-20 min at least 2 or 3 times a day and if it didnt get better after 5 or 6 days then maybe a doctor. Am I giving the wrong advice?
This may be an abscess or an infected lymph node of the neck. Does he have throat or chest infection? He would require antibiotics to resolve the infection. If he is not allergic to penicillin group, then Cap Amoxicillin 500 mg 8 hourly for 5 days would help. However, it will be good if your friend could consult an ENT surgeon, and take his advise.
