Good Day
It's quite possible the first choice you mentioned, the external sphincter being open and the internal closed. The internal sphincter is involuntary and is usually closed at all times unless you are opening the bowel to defecate. The moment the bowel is emptied the internal sphincter shuts and squeezes the residual faeces out. In some conditions the sphincter does not close properly and hence there is a leakage of faeces even when you have finished evacuating the bowel. There are various causes for this and exercises to reduce this phenomenon. Some cases require surgery as well. Speak to your Surgeon in this regard.
