Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a small bump above my navel that I can push back in. It might be a half to 3/4 in long. It comes out slightly, not really noticeable, when I cough so I m thinking its a hernia. What precautions do I have to take or would I need surgery. Right now I put on a belt so it doesn t do it since i cough in my sleep? YYYY@YYYY
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. You have given a book picture of a hernia, a swelling that pops out on coughing or increase in intra-abdominal pressure by any means - there is a impulse on coughing and it is reducible that is you can reduce it back. Precautions to be taken is avoid anything that increases intra-abdominal pressure, avoid straining, take laxatives if there are hard stools. Applying belt over it may help to an extent but the correct treatment is get operated to have permanent cure. Many a times such hernia of the type of paraumbilical or so take years together to increase or get obstructed or strangulated. If the fat gets entrapped it may pain slightly. IF the opening is large and intestines come out of it in the hernial sac then you must get operated as soon as possible to avoid the complications of strangulation which is a dreaded one.,
