What Does A Rash From The Lower Back To The Under Arm Indicate?
Hello, My name is Nick. I have a 3 1\2 yo daughter. She woke up this morning with a sand paper lile rash running from her lower back to up under her right arm and a fever of 102 f. My wife gave her 5ml of childrens tylenol and alergy medicine. Which brought the fever down to a little over 100f. Since then her fever has spiked 2 more times and we have given her tylenol both times. Currently her temp is 99.9. Now we have another symptom. Now her tongue has the strawberry bumps and a darker red in color and the white coating over it. I understand that these are the symptoms of scarlet fever, I am wondering if we need to bring her in now, or can we monitor her through the night and take her to her pcp in the morning.
You are right that the symptoms you describe sound like scarlet fever, though usually there would also be a sore throat along with this. Another possibility would be Kawasaki fever. Either way, she should be seen by her doctor soon, but it should not be an emergency, and you can wait until the morning to bring her to her PCP. Only if she is difficult to arouse, or is unable to tolerate fluids, better to take her to the ER to be evaluated sooner.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
