What Does A Thread Like Protrusion From Anus Of A Child Indicate?

My 6 year old son has a thread protruding from his anus. The thread has been pulled very gently but it is causing him pain so I have trimmed off the excess and left it to work out during his next bowel movement. My question is really to find out if this is dangerous in any way and do I need to take him to a GP or the hospital to have this extracted?
