What Does An Altered Sense Of Taste Indicate?

Hello Doctor, Periodically over the course of the past month I have had sudden feelings of having a perfume taste in my mouth. It is the same sensation, feeling of when you spray air freshener or perfume and you feel as if you are choking on it. However, I have not sprayed anything, am not wearing perfume, do not smell any strong odors. This comes on all of a sudden and lasts about a minute, followed by chills and later sweat, this all happens within a couple of minutes. I am taking Thyronorm 75 mcg for the past 7 years. Besides that I am not on any new medications, being treated for any chronic disease. Can you give me some insight into this?

Hello,

You have symptoms of an altered sense of taste which could be due to improper hygiene of the oral cavity, due long term side effects of certain medications and could be due to glossopharyngeal nerve dysfunction. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to
- Chew on sugar-free candies as it enhances and stimulates salivary flow.
- Maintain proper oral hygiene and use oral corticosteroids as well because it will resume back taste.
- Drink plenty of water and fluids.
- Take a diet rich in zinc supplements as that will recover taste.
You should visit neurologist once as well and take medications which lower down autoimmune or nervous system disorder if it is due to nerve dysfunction.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
