I wake up each night with a bitter taste in my mouth and stomach discomfort. It goes away in the morning when I am prone after I eat breakfast. I am a vegan. Probably unrelated I have ringing in the ears for last few years and some numbness in my toes. What are the possible causes for the stomach issues? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The ringing in your ears and numbness in your toes is probably a vitamin B12 deficiency. It is a common deficiency in vegans. You could take vitamin B12 injections at intervals to normalize that value. Additionally, the stomach discomfort and bitter taste could be due to reflux disease. Try sleeping with your head elevated. You could also take antacids like pantoprazole or ranitidine. It should help with the bitter taste.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
