Hello,

A Pap smear is a test for screening of cervical cancer in women by collecting cells from the cervix. A Pap smear can also detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. The human papillomavirus is a virus that causes skin and mucous membrane infections. It is passed from one person to another by skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections.

Mild cervical dysplasia or borderline changes are seen with HPV infection. It usually needs no treatment but follows up recommended, because there is a 12–16% chance of progression to more severe dysplasia. HPV genotyping must be done to rule out HPV-16 and 18 as they carry more risk to malignancy. So you can get tested for that first. If positive frequent follow-up and colposcopy required.
