What Does Cardiomegaly With Unfolding Of Aorta Indicate?
hello Dr. my father is 58 yrs old and he has been suffering from cough for the past 2 weeks and has feever on and off. A chest Xray suggests he has cardiomegaly with unfolding of aorta. Is this a serious problem? He has High BP and it under controlw ith medicines. Otherwise he exercises everyday and is very fit.
Dear Sir/ madam Thanks for your query to us. Cardiomegaly means larger than normal shadow of heart on x-ray. This can be due to heart enlargement, fluid around heart or an artifact. Best way to decipher the exact cause is Echocardiography. Unfolding of aorta is mostly related to age related changes. This is due to enlargement of shadow of major blood vessel on x-ray due to age related widening, however, disease process like aortic aneurysm should be ruled out. This may require an ultrasound or MRI, depending upon the degree of suspicion. Sincerely Sukhvinder
