Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Discomfort Under Left Rib Cage While On Medication For BP Suggest?
I am 57 years old male. Blood pressure 144/94/45. Currently taking Diltiazim, Carvedilol, Simvastatin and Allopurinol. I am 5-11 and weight 210 lbs. Don t exercise much. For the past 4 months, I have been feeling some discomfort under my left rib cage as if something was growing bigger and bigger in there. Sometimes, it s even a bit painful. Any idea?
The symptoms may be indicative of costochondritis, intercostal neuralgia, fibromyalgia, etc. However, side effects of the medications you have been taking may trigger the symptoms. You are suggested to get clinically examined, get blood workouts and imaging tests (X-ray, CT, MRI) done. Talk to your doctor so that the medicines can be replaced or doses monitored so that you are more comfortable.
Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. You may need lidocaine gels or skin patches for topical application. Antidepressants also help to relieve nerve related pain, you can take amitriptyline for relieve. Your treating doctor may give you intercostal nerve block injection. You are suggested to do exercises under a Physio therapist.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
