What Does High Value Of TSH Means?

Hi
I had hyperthyroidism before 12 months, and I took carbimazole in that period, starting from 30 mg aday, till 5 mg per day now...my T4 is within normal level, and TSH is raised.. Is this indicate hypothroidism, or is indicate response? if response, can I stop carbimazole now, without tappering it?
With best regards

Hello and welcome to HCM!
I do understand your concern. As you didn't mention your proper diagnose (Graves' disease or nodular hyperfunctioning goitre) i am trying to explain you the definite treatment for each case.
Usually oral tablets are given for a period of 12-18 months to stabilise the hormonal level and if there are recurrences (if the disease is repeated) a definite treatment is proposed and there are 2 alternatives:

-To destroy the gland with radioactive iodine
-Surgery removal of the gland

The raise of TSH means that you may try to stop the treatment and talk with your doctor for future alternatives.
Hope i was helpful.

Best regards,
Dr.M.Guni
