Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yesterday I noticed my belly button was red and as I looked closer I saw some yellow pus drainage coming out and it smells bad. I immediately got some alcohol swabs and cleaned it and have been putting some bag balm on it cleaning it twice a day. Since I have cleaned it I have notice small trace amounts of the same drainage from the very back of my belly button but just redness since. I noticed there are bilateral skin tears on both side of my belly button and it hurts. Any reason to see my PCP or just continue cleaning it?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Considering what you have written above, I think you have an infection in your belly button. The cause of this infection commonly is bacteria but it might also be a yeast infection. The discharge might also come from an urachal cyst or a sebaceous cyst. A physical examination is necessary to put the right diagnosis because treatment depends on the diagnosis .You might need antibiotic or antifungal ointments to use. In my opinion you should consult your doctor. Meanwihle you can continue to clean with alcohol and keep it dry.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
