What Does Inflammatory Smears With Squamous Metaplasia Mean?
sir, i am shanmugaseenivasan, my wife got the following smear test results. any issue. please advice me. smear study Result:- pap smear studied shows superficial cells, intermediate cells, endocervical cells and few metaplastic squamous cells on an inflammatory background. there is no evidence of dysplasia. Impression:- Inflammatory smears with squamous metaplasia.
Hello and welcome to HCM, The interpretation of Pap test is as follows: Superficial cells, intermediate cells and endocervical cells are normal cells of the genital tract. Metaplastic squamous cells are formed due to presence of some factor like infection, foreign body etc. Presence of inflammatory background identifies the cause of metaplastic change in squamous cells. Inflammatory cells in pap test are due to presence of infection in genital tract. A course of anti-microbial therapy can be taken to treat the infection and the pap test can be repeated thereafter.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
