What Does 'minimal Subsegmental Atelectasis At Both Lung Base' Mean?

I just received a copy of my thoracic spine and it reports multilevel disc degenerative changes in the thoracic spine at multiple levels which are more pronounced at T9-T10. Left paracentral disc protrusion at T7-T8 level causing deformity of the thecal sac. Also, noted is minimal subsegmental atelectasis at both lung base. Please help provide layman understanding of this report.

Thanks for writing to us

According to report you have degenerative disc prolapse of spine.
Degenerative changes occurs in spine due to aging and development of weakness in annulus fibrosis which allows herniation of disc.

1.There is degenerative disc changes in thoracic region at multiple levels more at T9-10 level.
2.There is also disc protrusion at T7-8 level in left paracentral position causing deformity of the thecal sac.

There is minimal atelectasis (collapsed) lung parenchyma in basal region of both lungs.It may be due to chronic infection or retained secretions.
