General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Human vertebral system is made of vertebrae and spinal cord along with vessels, muscles and ligaments. Each vertebra has vertebral body in front and lamina in the back. The space between the body and lamina is the space for spinal cord. Spinal canal is formed by joining the spaces of all the vertebrae. Vertebral disc is the structure found between the two vertebrae. It helps in the weight transmission and stress release during the movements of the spine.

On ageing the disc may dehydrated and protrudes out of its limits and may compress the spinal nerves causing pain and numbness in the area of supply. In your report L5 descends down over the sacrum. The vertebral disc between the L4 and L5 vertebrae extends backwards and upwards and compressing the L5 spinal nerve. Physiotherapy and analgesics helps you to recover from the symptoms. Surgery may be needed in non responsive individuals.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
