I recently saw a neurologist because of memory loss. I m a 58 year old woman. The MRI showed Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, and a 1.4 x 0.9 x 1.4 cm pineal region cyst. I also have constant pulsing pressure or headaches, frequent nausea, and difficulty sleeping. I was told I need a shunt placed for the hydrocephalus. The neurologist didn t mention the cyst. I ve read everything I can find on the internet about these cysts and now I m wondering if there is any significance to it.
Hello and welcome to HCM, The symptoms experienced by you - headache, nausea, difficulty in sleeping are most probably due to normal pressure hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is collection of excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in sub-arachanoid space around brain. The collection of excessive CSF can lead to high pressure, however, in your case the pressure is normal. Your doctor has correctly advised to go for shunt to relieve the hydrocephalus. The cyst in pineal gland does not appear cause any deleterious symptoms thus it can be left as it is. A regular follow up of the cyst will suffice.
