Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
today i collect mri of my father. He is 50 yrs old and get a stroke attack. there are three suggestive. can u you please explain these 1.multifocal lacunar infarct in cerebral deep grey and white matter and in pons. 2.Diffuse ischemic changes in cerebral deep white matter 3. Diffuse cerebral atrophy
Your father's report indicates that he has had multiple lacunar infarcts in his brain covering a large area. Lacunar infarcts are blockages in the smaller arteries of the brain. These are strokes too.
Generally, strokes mainly refer to blockages in the larger arteries and which cause very visible symptoms like paralysis of the arms or legs. Lacuanr strokes cover smaller areas of the brain and may not cause very obvious symptoms unless a detailed examination is done.
I assume your father has one or more of comorbid illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, irregular heart beat or any condition which causes inflammation of the arteries. These are the most common possibilities.
I am afraid that the small blockages have already caused some amount of damage to the brain tissue which is not reversible. However, many a times, these strokes are fore-runners of bigger blockages in other arteries. These can be prevented by adequate control of the above mentioned conditions.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr Geeta
