What Does My MRI Scan Test Report Indicate?

I will not be seeing a Neurosurgeon until JULY! I would like to know now what my MRI means, if you please? Few foci of slight abnormal signal in the bilateral periventricular white matter on FLAIR imaging. These are nonspecific and may represent minimal small vessel ischemia, demiyelination or gliosis.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

This report of your brain MRI scan suggests that around the brain ventricles, there are visible areas of certain tissue change. The possible underlying pathologies suggested by the person that read your MRI are as follows:
- minimal small vessel ischemia - meaning a very small area with a certain but not dangerous lack of blood flow,
- demyelination - a process of damaging of the myelin covering sheath of neurons which has to be further evaluated in this case
gliosis - a process that occurs in response to a damage to the nervous system (trauma, multiple sclerosis, alzheimer's disease, etc).

However, there is no need to feel endangered in any way, although, if you experience any unusual symptoms/signs or worsening of already existing ones whatsoever, you should consult a doctor and further evaluation should be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aleksandar Dimovski, General & Family Physician
