What Does My TSH Level Indicate?

Hi,

During pregnancy, my wife had thyroid problem(Her TSH count was around 6.5)

Gynacalogist suggested to use Thyronorm 25mg.

After using the tablets, her TSH count came to normal range.

She has given birth to a baby boy in september 25th 2010.

on the advice of the gynocologist she continued taking Thyronorm tablets.

In Nov 2010, the TSH was again out of normal range(6.5) and

In Jan2011 again the TSH is in normal range(2.27).

DO we need to consult a Thyroid specialist?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern regarding to your wife's health. The persisting high TSH level is an indicator of a low dose of Levothyroxine. She needs to increase the dose ( from 25 mcg to 50 mcg) and take it regularly, fasting with empty stomach.6 weeks after raising the dose, a TSH level should be checked to confirm that the dose is the right one.

Hope the information will help. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Dr. Mirjeta
