What Does My Brain MRI Result While Treating For Epilepsy Indicate?
Hi, I am 31 and have been diagnosed with epilepsy since I was 13. I have been told that I have a scar on my brain. My epilepsy has been controlled via medication. However, in July I was fasting and was not taking meds correctly hence I had a fit. Since then I have had 2 MRI scans within 10 days of each other. The results came back today and it says MRI shows an ill defined right listeria l temporal lobe abnormality with signal voids present suggesting there is a dysplastic abnormality in keeping with the presentation of seizure disorder. The patient will be recalled for further imaging with enhanced spectroscopy and contrast MR angiography Now I can t make head or tail of this and am very concerned. I ve not been able to access a Dr and now I m turning to you. REGARDS ,Safina

General & Family Physician, Dr. Taimoor's Response
Hi and welcome to HCM. I'm Dr. Taimur and I will be addressing your health concerns. I have read your question and understand your concern.
The MRI repost says that there is some abnormal tissue ( dysplastic means any abnormal tissue not fitting in that place where it is) in the right temporal lobe that is the area just above the ear. MR Spectroscopy and Contrast Angiography is to determine the nature of that tissue that either it is malignant or benign. And stopping or irregularities in anti epileptic treatment by self is very much risky as it can result in fits any time. The standard recommendation is this that if you are fits free for 3 years then you can gradually taper the dose of drugs down by consultation of a doctor, so kindly take your medications regularly.
I hope this might be of some help, if you have any query feel free to ask me any time. Thanks. Dr. Taimur
