What Does My Kidney Ultrasound Mean?

I have a upj obstruction in left kidney. I have had 2 stents and a nephroplasty. I want to avoid surgery. I am mostly symptom free, occasional flank pain is the exception. My recent ultrasound revealed prominent renal pelves bilaterally. No mention of severity or hydronephrosis. What does this mean, and what future complications could arise?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Prominent renal pelvis refers to a condition where the kidneys are slightly ballooned out. This is technically less than hydronephrosis. The further treatment depends on the draining of urine from the kidneys and your kidney function tests. The kidney condition and symptoms may not compliment each other all the time. If your kidney appearance and serum creatinine, urea and GFR are normal then there is no need to worry. You must regularly get ultrasound scans done to exclude any evolving kidney disease at the earliest stages.
