What Does My Widal Test Result Indicate?

Hi. One month back my Widel test result was positive. Salmonella Typhii O level was observerd 1:160 at that time. I took prescribed antibiotics for 2.5 weeks. I did my test again yesterday for confirmation. it showed 1:80 now. I consulted few docs and also did some google and found that for type O 1;80 is not considered positive and after getting cured from typhoid .. This will be there for some 3-4 months . Pls let me know if 1:80 is normal and howmany days it takes to get completly reccover from this. Do i need to take some antibiotics now ? I am currently taking some Vitamin tablets(coenzyme q10) as prescribed by doctor. What diet i should follow ? Age : 27 Smoking : Yes [Smoking occassionaly now: weekly once / twice ] Drinking : Yes [Stopped taking alcohol from last 2 months. Before typhoid i used to drink twice - thrice a month]

Hello,

You have been suffering from typhoid since a month. You are better now but are an occasional smoker and also take alcohol. Typhoid fever has a tendency to recur if precautions are not taken. Salmonella typhi enters gastrointestinal epithelial cells for submucosal translocation and hence causes symptoms. Always take boiled water after cooling it, avoid taking street food as mis-handled food(food cooked without maintaining proper hygiene) may be contaminated.

Always eat food that is well cooked, take fruits and vegetables after washing it properly. Avoid taking food that is raw. Unpasteurized milk and milk products like raw milk may be contaminated with salmonella. Do not take raw or undercooked eggs and meat that is not properly cooked. You are suggested to take boiled food with a dash of olive oil. Avoid taking fried food, spicy or oily food.

If you are maintaining strict diet control you will not be under risk of relapse. However, if symptoms are persistent you may have to take antibiotics but before that get a repeat Widal test done. Do not smoke, do not take alcohol, stay away from addictions if any for better recovery & best efficacy of medicines taken.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
