What Does Occasional Pus Cell And Gram Positive Cocci In Pairs Along With Culture Yielding Heavy Growth Of Streptococcus Pneumonia Signify?
My Baby of 3 months had ear discharge and so had to go for a swab test and the report says Gram s smear shows occasional pus cells and gram positive cocci in pairs. The culture yields heavy growth of streptococcus pneumoniae...could u explain this to me? also i m hearing aid user, had hearing loss since 8 years...would this effect my baby in any ways?
Hi, I went through your query. The report means your baby has a bacterial infection in the ear. The growth is quite heavy which means the infection is well established. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a very common cause of ear infection. Culture and sensitivity test of the discharge will indicate what antibiotic will be effective against the infection. Generally amoxicillin-clavulanate works well. I would also advise you to ensure that water does not enter the baby's ears while bathing or otherwise. The cause of your hearing loss will decide if your baby can suffer a problem too. If the cause is hereditary your baby may be involved. If it is due to acquired causes like trauma, untreated infection your baby will not be affected. The ear infection is not related to your hearing loss. Hope this helps.
