What Does Pain And Swelling In The Big Toe Indicate?

My toe (next to my big toe) began to hurt on Friday. I thought that perhaps an insect bit me because it was swollen a bit. When I got home from work, I iced it. The swelling went down. Today, it continues to hurt (not all over) but on the top down by where it joins my foot. This is unusual for me. I am 65, broke my wrist at the end of July and had surgery at the beginning of August, but am in good health. Any ideas what the issue might be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
it could be gout. probably too early for an x-ray since it takes more time for pathognomonic changes to appear. also check blood for raised levels of uric acid, more then once, sincd the test may miss its peaks. treatment: nsails in the acute ,painful phase,,,and alopurinol to keep it under control in the long run.
