What Does Pain On The Left Side Of The Rib Cage Indicate?

My husband has been having pain on his left side on his rib cage. He had a good bowel movement on Saturday 3 days ago. He has hurt there for quite sometime but it seems like it s getting worse. He had a stroke 8 mos ago and it affected his left side where his pain is. He has an xray but it showed nothing. He also runs temps. About an hour ago it was 100.7. I want to send him to the ER but again, the last time it showed nothing. Any suggestions?
