What Does Persistent Low Body Temperature Indicate?

I rarely run a body temperature of 98.6, it is usually lower. Not a lot lower, I have been this way since I ran a really high fever about 40 years ago. Is this something I need to be concerned about? I feel fine but my husband gets all freaky about it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for the query.

First of all, I would like to say you that not everyone has the standard 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit normal body temperature. Your body temperature may be a little lower than that, as in your case, and it shouldn't be a cause of concern.

Lower body temperature should be taken seriously if it also presents with certain symptoms. Hormonal imbalance in the body due to some disturbance in the thyroid gland , the pituitary gland in the brain or the adrenal glands may cause your body temperature to drop along with producing other symptoms.

So, if I would have been your physician,
first of all, I would have advised you not to panic. Secondly I would ask you about any other associated symptoms, if any. And thirdly, when in doubt, I would have advised you to get the following investigations done:

1. TSH( thyroid stimulating hormone, to rule out abnormalities of thyroid gland)
2. FSH, LH ( to rule out any abnormalities of pituitary gland)

So, discuss these with your physician and do post me the reports.

Best of luck
I am sure you ll be in good health.
