What Does Prolonged On And Off Pain Under The Rib Cage Suggest?

I have had on and off pain in the area underneath my right rib cage for many months; I thought I originally injured some intercostal muscles lifting weights in a fly out from my body but it still bothers me at times and I m wondering if it could be something else.

You have not described the pattern of the pain. It can be due to a lot of causes.
If it noticed with changing posture and a local tendrness site present then it most likely due to muscular type of pain. Many cases it can present for long term. Analgesic and hot compression may help in cure.
If the pain present along with breathing or aggravated while taking inspiration it can be due to plural origin.
You have not mentioned if there any other symptoms present or not like fever, cough, night sweat. Which may indicate a lung pathology.
Bony tenderness may be a cause even if there is no fracture which have a significance.
So you have to be tested clinically for proper diagnosis.
