What Does Sharp Pain In The Lower Abdomen On The Left Side Indicate?

Yesterday morning I had sharp stabbing pains in my lower left side. I feel like I am constipated but can make small movements a couple times a day. Last night the pain moved to the lower front abdomen. I could not sleep. I don t want to eat as I feel bloated. The pain gets worse if I ride in a car on a bumpy road. It is not a stabbing pain now but dull very painful. I have been drinking a lot water and taken stool softners and finally took a laxative this morning but can not move my bowels even though I feel the urge to do so.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. As it is slightly difficult to know about your age and gender thus cannot comment on the type of pain but as it is on the left side it is termed as 'left lower quadrant pain' and is often related to the digestive tract but can also be related to conditions of the body wall, skin, blood vessels, urinary tract, or reproductive organs

PS. diverticulitis is one of the most common causes.

2. At present all I can say is that it might be a 'gastrointestinal' symptoms thus you should contact either a general surgeon, gastroenterologist or Gynecologist and if not sure consult your GP who after reviewing your case history and physical examination will refer you to specialist concerned.

PS. The most common diagnoses of lower abdominal pain relate to uterine, gonadal, renal, and bladder complications, [less common causes like primary dermatologic and musculoskeletal problems as well as referred pain and neuropathies related to underlying vertebral and spinal cord complications can also occur], so examination is mandatory for further workup and management.

3. As there is constipation, pain abdomen, bloating, unable to move bowel, no response to laxative, I might suspect intestinal obstruction [unless proved otherwise], so consult a Surgeon immediately.
